This Day in Mets History

1968- Mets manager Gil Hodges suffers a mild heart attack during a game against the Atlanta Braves. He will stay hospitalized untiil October 20th and die in 1972 of massive coronary.(www.nationalpastime.com)

1969- The Mets clinch the first-ever NL East title with a 6-0 win over the Cardinals. The fans go into a frenzy at Shea and run on the field to celebrate to the team.

1975- Tom Seaver loses his no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th inning against the Cubs when Joe Wallis lines a single for the Cubs first hit. The Mets will go on the lose the game in the 11th inning 1-0.

1991- Howard Johnson hits his 37th HR setting a NL record for switch-hitters in a 10-8 loss to the Cardinals. He finished the season with 38 HR's and 117 RBI's, becoming the first switch-hitter to lead the NL.
