Ike Davis to Play for USA

Ike Davis has been selected to be on the USA roster for the World Cup in Europe that will be starting September 9th and finishing the 27th. He is also scheduled to be one of the Mets participants in the Arizona Fall League. Davis has progress very well this year and at excelled at the AA with Binghamton since being promoted.

Since being promoted he has hit .307 avg, .386 obp, .554 slg with 12HR, 41RBI, and 14 2b's. The total of his numbers from A and AA are .297, .381, .519 with 19HR, 69RBI, and 31 2b's. He has also hit .271 against lefties with a .471 slg, and .333 with runners on and a .545 slg.

Ike has played very well this year and definitely excited expectations after how poorly he did last year. The Mets shouldn't rush him because he is only 22 but if he can hit, and continues to prove so I expect to see him at Citi Field at sometimes next year.

Matt Murton

Matt Murton was recently DFA by the Colorado Rockies and I definitely like the Mets to go out and get him. He is a Major League hitter and I have no idea why is hasn't got a chance from someone to play everyday. He is a career .287 avg, .353 obp and .444 in the bigs but for some reason can't get a consistent shot. He was hitting .321 with 10 HR's and 71 RBI's this year at AAA for the Rockies. The Mets could use a right handed outfielder with some pop.

Pretty simple, cut Sheff and bring Murton in.

The Mets are facing the very though Josh Johnson, so Pelf is gonna have to have is good stuff tonight.

In other news Lance Broadway has been called up to take Oliver Perez's spot on the roster. I'm assuming he will also take his spot in the rotation becasue he has only been a starter since we got him from the White Sox for Ramon Castro.

If tonight was the last tonight I ever saw Schnieder in a Mets unifrom I would be very happy, he is just terrbile at the plate right now.

This Day in Mets History

In the same game, trailing 7-0 early in the game, the Phillies rally to beat the Mets at Citizens Bank Park, 8-7. Chris Coste, who goes 4-for-4 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the 8th inning, delivers the walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th to put Philadelphia back into first place, a half a game ahead of New York.

WAGS TRADED

Billy Wagner was traded to the Red Sox today for 2 players to be named later. One is now believed to be Chris Carter, who is a 26 year old left handed power hitter. He is not a prospect but could be a guy not that stick around and be on the team next. But definitely could put some instant power into the current lineup.

Yesterday on my way home from the Mets game me and my dad were discussing Wags and who they should get in return and oddly enough Chris Carter is the guy I said would be the most intriguing/likely. Granted he isn't young but he has power and the Mets need some badly, he should be in the bigs the rest of the year to see what he has.

Evans Recalled

Nick Evans is going to be recalled to take Billy Wagners spot.

I'm very glad to see Nick back up here and feel that he should have been with the team all year. He has good gap power and plays a good first base and an ok left or right field.

This Day in Mets History

Wagner Claimed

Billy Wagner has been claimed and now the Mets have 72 hours to trade him. No surprise that he was claimed after the way he threw last night. He hit as high as 96 on the gun and was throwing a good slider, specially the one he struck out McCann on.

I know most people would like to trade Billy because we have nothing to play for this year, but I would keep him and see if he generates more trade value over the next month or so. The only way I would trade him is if the other team eats part of his salary and we get a decent prospect. Otherwise you pick up his option for next year and see what you get for him in the offseason. But the Mets need to keep on of him or Putz you can't have a good bullpen without a good setup man.

Time to Get Rid of Livan and Schneider

I wish the Mets could do one thing right this year and get rid of the players that are not gonna be back with the team next year. We have guys down in Buffalo and in Binghamton that I would rather see playing right now then Livan, Schneider, and Redding.

These players should not be in the plans for next years team, therefore they should not be on a non-contending team in August and September.

Livan was good the first half of the season but he has obviously hit some short of wall and it is time to get someone younger who could have a future with this team. I would bring up Lance Broadway(who is on the 40) or Tobi Stoner who is not. Granted neither has done great at Buffalo but Stoner has never seen the bigs and Broadway has never seen the National League. And there is no way that either could do any worse then what Livan has been doing.

Schneider has been an automatic out lately not even hitting balls hard, he has become very hard to watch. Over the last month or so he may be the worst ML hitter I have ever seen. He is a free agent after the season and obviously should not be in the plans for next years team. The Mets could bring up Josh Thole who has been hitting great this year(.331avg) and see if he is a fit for next years team or boost his trade value. They could bring up Rene Rivera who is only 26 and has 5 HR's and 14 RBI's over his last 10 games.

I liked the Tim Redding signing because I thought he would make a good #5 but he has not worked out and he won't be back with the team next year. By getting rid of him the Mets can begin evaluating some options for next years bullpen. They could bring up guys on the 40 like Eddie Kunz or Arturo Lopez or other intriguing options like Adam Bostick or Roy Merritt.

The whole idea behind this is to give the younger guys who could be a part of the future a chance instead of the old washed up players who won't be here next year. Just put Livan, Redding, and Schneider on waivers maybe there is a contending team that would want a veteran, if no one does then cut them.

Its time for the Mets to stop relying on old past their prime players every year to patch up there team.

September Callups

Its getting close to that time for the Mets to make some September call ups. This year these call ups should be more used to see the value of some of the younger fringe players in the Mets organization instead of looking for veterans to help for a playoff push. So I will look at some players the Mets should call up, players they probably will call up, and players some would like to see up but I don't think are ready.

Should-

  • Nick Evans: I think he is an obvious choice because he has been up for parts of the last two season and hit decent. The Mets need to find out if he is a Major League player or not, I believe he is a ML hitter and should be on the 25 to start the next year. I would play him everyday while starting him in left and a little at first, and he should be the first pinch hitter off the bench to see if he can handle it. He has played a pretty good first base and is at least adequate in left. He looks like he could have good doubles power and he kills lefties.
  • Javier Castillo: He is versatile infielder who can play all four positions with some pop and is relatively young(26) compared to some guys the Mets have called up this year. The Mets have needed infield depth all year(which is why they traded for Castillo earlier this year) and I'm kinda surprised he hasn't got a look yet instead of Valdez and Berroa. I don't think he is a long term answer obviously but it would be nice to see a guy play SS who can hit a HR(6 this year and 22 2B's) and have a guy with some pop pinch hit.
  • Adam Bostick- He is a 26-year old lefty that the Mets received in the Lindstrom/Owens trade. He failed as a starter but has excelled in his first year as reliever. He has a 2.22 era with one save and a 3-1 record in 44.2 innings between Binghamton and Buffalo. He has 51k's and 18 BB's with an .216 opponents batting average. The Mets have needed a second lefty all year and again I'm surprised Bostick has not got a chance, I would have brought him up instead of Misch.
  • Eddie Kunz- Granted he had not been that good this year( 4.50 era, with 1/1 BB/K ratio) but I think the Mets need to see what they have with Kunz. He didn't handle the big stage well last year, but they need to look at him for the possibility of being in the bullpen next year. On the plus size he has only allowed 4o hits in 48 innings pitched.
  • Josh Thole- Has been outstanding at the plate this year in Binghamton batting .333 with 40 RBI, 27 2B's, more walks(39), then strikeouts(32), with an OPS of .842, and even has 6 stolen bases. The Mets need to break the kid into the Majors, we only have 2 catchers on the roster and Schneider is always hurting so they should be able to find him some at bats.

Probably Will-

  • Argenis Reyes- The Mets do need infield depth but no more Reyes, Argenis anyways, he just can't hit. We have Hernandez now so there really is no use for him because they are similar players; good speed, good glove, and no bat.
  • Pat Misch- He pitched ok when he was up with the Mets before but he shouldn't be in the plans for next year so why bring him up. I would rather see want Bostick has to offer.
  • Robinson Cancel- As i said before the Mets need a third catcher and unfortunately if will be Robinson because of his experience. Cancel is nothing more then good minor league depth, but Schneider is a FA after the year so the Mets need so see if Thole can play in the bigs.
  • Knowing the Mets they will probably bring up some other AAAA player to bolster the bullpen like Kyle Snyder and maybe another old bench player like Mike Lamb.

Prospects Fans Would Like To See-

  • Ruben Tejada: I understand he is hitting .294 and has exceeded expectations at the Double-A level but he is still only 19 and the Mets should not rush his development. He needs some more minor league grooming especially at a different position because he is not gonna play short for the Mets
  • Ike Davis: He has hit very well this year, and like Tejada has exceeded expectations with a .296 avg, 9 HR's and 31 RBI's in 42 games in Binghamton. I would like to see him play but there just isn't a place for him with Murphy playing everyday at first base.

I am very interested to see what you guys think the Mets should do with there September call ups.

Will post readers suggestions.

Tonights Lineup

Pagan, cf
Castillo, 2b
Wright, 3b- Homered off Davis last week
Francoeur, rf
Tatis, lf
Murphy, 1b- Homered off Davis last week
Santos, c
Hernandez, ss
Pelfrey, rhp

Still no Sheffield, if he can't play put him on the DL already.

Pedro to Start Wednesday

Pedro is gonna make his Phillie debut on Wednesday pushing veteran Jaime Moyer to the bullpen. This also means that Pedro that he would be setup for a start against the Mets in two weeks when the Phils come to Citi Field.

As much as Pedro did for this team, I hope the Mets hit him very hard. It would be tough for me to see him do well against the Mets after he didn't pitch well at all for us the last 2 years

Mets Get Air Hernandez Back

Today the Mets traded Minor League infielder Greg Veloz for Anderson Hernandez. The Mets are hurting bad for some middle infield depth and Hernandez become expendable with the Nats because of how well Alberto Gonzalez has been playing.

Looks like a good move to me we need some depth that isn't named Angel Berroa or over 30. Hernandez doesn't hit much but is a great defender and has good speed. While Veloz is highly regarded by some, he has done absolutely nothing at the plate this year, so he basically is just a younger version of Hernandez and the Mets need a middle infielder now.

Hopefully this isn't a sign that Luis is hurt more then they are saying.

I for one am happy to see Air Hernandez back.

This Day in Mets History

Post Game Update

Manuel says that Niese may have a tear in his hamstring which would obviously mean he is done for the there. Manuel also said that Parnell might get a chance to start this year because they will need a starter Monday against Arizona.

While I wouldn't mind seeing Parnell as a starter, in August is not the time to be making the switch.

Game Recap 8/5 Mets Win 9-0

First off the Injury News:
  • Jonathan Niese left the game in the second inning after covering first on a potential double play. The Mets say he has a right hamstring strain and he has gone to the hospital for a MRI.
  • Gary Sheffield left the game in the sixth inning after coming out of the box in pain on what should have been an easy double but ended up being a single. I think Gary will be fine, it looked to me like he justed want out of a blowout. I bet he plays tomorrow, at worst on Friday
  • Luis Castillo is listed day-to-day but probably won't play until Friday or Saturday.

Now for the Game:

  • The Mets came back after a crushing game last night and just played a great game all around.
  • Angel Pagan had a huge game including a RBI triple, 2-run homerun, sac fly, and a single. He has just been great since coming off the DL and might have made a name for himself to be included in next years team
  • Figgy stepped in and did an amazing job 2 days after not being able to make it out of the second inning. He pitched 4.1 allowing no runs and striking out 5 with atleast 3 of them on fastballs. Then he had the big hit of the game with runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the 2nd he crushed a pitch to center field that Ankiel dove for but it went of end of his glove. Figgy ended up with a stand up triple and 2 RBI's.
  • Bobby Parnell picked up his first career save going 3 innings giving up one hit, striking out 3, and throwing an impressive 22 out of 30 pitches for strikes. Then in the bottom of the eight he had an impressive at bat that ended in a line drive single up the middle for his first ever.
  • Cora: 1-5, R, RBI
  • Wright: 3-4, HR, BB, 2 RBI
  • Sheff: 1-4
  • Murph: 1-5
  • Frenchy: 2-3, 2B, BB( his first as a Met)
  • Schneider: 1-4, R, 2B
  • Reed: pinch hit double and run scored

Figgy to Pitch Tomorrow

Nelson Figueroa was scratched from his Triple-A start today so that he can pitch tomorrow in the last game of a 4-game set with the Diamondbacks against Dan Haren. Figgy pitched in the majors once this year and went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs.

So far this season in Buffalo he is 7-5 with a 2.25 era and is 7-1 with a 1.51 era in his last 10 starts. He has only allowed 5 HR's this year.

I like Figgy alot and think he deserves to be on this team alot more then Tim Redding who should lose his roster spot when he needs to be promoted. But the Mets will go the easy route and demote Pat Misch.
