Discussing Delgado

There have been lots of talks about the Mets still being interested in bringing Delgado back. At first I was keen on this idea, but I have come to my senses and decided that it is a bad idea.

Delgado never was a good defensive first basemen, now he is a 38 year-old coming off hip surgery. There is no way that a team can trust to him play first base even 2 or 3 times a week. Especially the Mets who have Pelfrey needing a comeback year and probably going to sign another groundball specialist in Joel Piniero. The Mets need someone who has some range at first base because it looks like they are stuck with Castillo at 2nd.

I do think that Delgado still can hit 25 HR's and have 90 RBI but at the cost of terrible range and no athlectism on defense. The focus for the Mets front office and Mets fans has been on power and that is why many consider Delgado a viable option.

The Mets got their power when they got Jason Bay, now they need to worry about their infield defense because of the possibility of having Pelfrey and Pineiro on the same staff. Not to mention Perez who goes crazy after bad defensive plays. The Mets also need to get someone who can play more then just first, they need a versatile player who can play some 3rd too.

The Mets could use the power of Delgado but I think for the Mets right now they need someone who can cover ground at first and play some third base as well.
