This Day in Mets History

1973- The Mets beat the Cubs 6-4 to capture the NL East Title. The Miracle Mets were in last place and 11.5 back on August 4th.

1974- Tom Seaver strikes out 14 Phillies to become in the first pitcher in National League History to strike out 200 or more batters in 7 straight seasons.

1982- Pitcher Terry Leach throws a 10-inning one-hitter against the Phillies, the only of its kind in Mets history. The Mets win 1-0 on a Hubie Brooks sac fly.

1985- Daryl Strawberry hits a 11th-inning HR to beat the Cardinals 1-0 and to cut the Cardinals lead to 2 games.

2002- The Mets fire manager Bobby Valentine.
